This is a costume that I created for my daughter. It is an original idea of mine based off of strong female characters depicted in the fantasy novels and books that my daughter likes.
My daughter wanted to be something original. She loves female hunters. We decided this would be a fun costume to design together. She drew sketches of ideas she had and told me some of the things she wanted to incorporate into the costume.
She definitely wanted a bow and quiver. She wanted everything to be in muted woodsy colors and she wanted a cape.
I collect fabrics throughout the year. So, I laid out all the fabrics that I had in the browns, golds and greens. We were looking for matte fabrics with no sheen that would blend in with forest foliage.
Once we had the desired fabrics selected, we chose which fabrics would be used for the various parts of the costume. We selected gold and khaki for the shirt and pants. The corset is an upholstery fabric. The cape is a suede like fabric.
I couldn't afford leather boots, so I ended up making boot covers out of heavy fabric. The boots were the most difficult and time-consuming part of this huntress costume.
The quiver is a cardboard tube covered with fabric. We made arrows from simple dowels and feathers.
I took the corset to the fabric store to find coordinating trim to decorate the edges. I also, purchased leather laces to lace up the front and sides of the corset.
We braided some leather strips together to make a simple headband.
My daughter carved her own walking stick and made her own bow from a branch. We are very happy with the results and have gotten a lot of positive feedback whenever she wears this costume.
Fortunately, because of the laces on the corset , it is adjustable and should fit her if she grows anymore.
