Professor Sprout and Mandrake

A group of us (family and friends) decided to make costumes inspired from the Harry Potter series. It was suggested that I could represent the character of Professor Pomona Sprout from the second book in the series "The Chamber of Secrets". With the help of two talented friends, we conjured up this wardrobe of witchery…

Sprout's Robe is made out of Egyptian cotton and was heavily modified from a graduation robe pattern.

Robe Collar was made using upholstery fabric.

Professor's Gloves are just a pair of brown gardening gloves that I covered with a scale pattern vinyl.

Hat was made with a burlap type fabric, built over a sun hat that is used for gardening.

Hair, it's real and not wig… just my own.

And last, but not least, the all important costume accessory…

Screaming Mandrake is a custom sculpt made of foam latex. Hidden in the green, plastic leaves on his head is a tiny speaker that emits a horrifying scream when a button is pushed. However, the sound has not harmed anyone yet - just knocked them out for a bit. : )

I have had a lot of fun portraying the Herbology professor from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You might even say that I've 'grown' accustom to it!

mandrake speaker NEW
by: Anonymous

It was a little device that my son-in-law picked up from Radio Shack a few years ago. I went to You Tube and brought up the scene in the greenhouse with the mandrakes. When they started screaming, I pushed a little button which recorded the sound. Then there is a separate button to play it back. I hide the speaker in the greenery on top of the mandrake's head. It uses a 9v battery, which I have to tape to the back of the mandrake ; )
