Learn how to dress up as a Smurf with these helpful makeup tutorials and costume tips.
The Smurfs were originally a television and comic program in Belgium (using the French language) and were first introduced way back in 1958! The word "smurf" is a made up word that came about during a meal, when the creator (Peyo - aka Pierre Culliford) was eating with a fellow artist - André Franquin - and he could not remember the French word for salt. So, "smurf" is a Dutch translation from the invented French word "Schtroumpf".
There is a place. A place that knows no sadness, where even feeling blue is a happy thing. A place inhabited by little blue beings three apples high. It lies deep within an enchanted forest, hidden away beyond the medieval village. Most people believe this place is made up, only to be found in books or children's imagination. Well, we beg to differ.
The smurfs live in mushrooms and are named based on their personal characteristics. Some of the more popular smurf characters are:
- Papa Smurf
- Brainy Smurf
- Grouchy Smurf
- Handy Smurf
- Jokey Smurf
- Vanity Smurf
- Sneaky Smurf
- Farmer Smurf
- Baby Smurf
- Painter Smurf
- Gargamel - the evil wizard and sworn enemy of the Smurfs (along with his mangy cat, Azrael)
To look like a smurf, you'll need:
- Blue skin
- Phrygian cap (soft, cone-shaped cap with the top pulled forward)
- White pants and shoes
- Smurfette wears a white dress and has long blonde hair
- Papa Smurf wears a red cap and red pants
- Talk like a smurf: use "smurf" randomly to replace both nouns and verbs
