I got the idea for this Yip-Yip martian costume while searching online and I knew I just had to make it! I just loved these alien characters from Sesame Street when I was a kid!
I used a few yards of crushed panne velvet for the body and a yard of black chiffon for the martian's mouth.
Cut a hole for the mouth and use hot glue to attach 3-4 layers of chiffon over the hole, and I used velcro for the top half of the mouth so you could open up the hole to be able to eat or drink or for a breath of air!!
It gets a little warm under there!
For the lip, I glued in a foam flower wreath - about a 10-inch circle and you hold on to that inside the costume to move the mouth up and down.
Foam balls form Yip-Yip's eyes and pipe cleaners twisted together form the antennae! Cut vertical strips in the fabric on the bottom to make the tentacles.
I got lots of compliments this Halloween on my homemade Yip-Yip martian costume!
